Why is it called “Not Finished Yet”?

Last August my family and I woke up on a Sunday morning at The Grand Hotel in Sunnyvale, CA.  It was a regular Sunday morning.  We got ready, loaded up our stuff, and headed down for breakfast.  On the way down the elevator my 2 year old daughter Hannah thought it would be fun to push the Fire Call button in the elevator.  You know, a regular morning with a kid in a hotel.  Breakfast was great and we loaded the car to head out to Bridges Community Church in Los Altos, CA.

As we entered the freeway I made a comment to my wife Kacee.  I said, “New churches intrigue me (we had never been to this church before).  I wonder what today holds.”  Her response back was, “I’m not sure, but I’m sure it will be an adventure.”  A matter of seconds later the car in front of me decided to stop on the freeway instead of speed up to let a car onto the freeway.  I had two options.  Option #1 was to rear end the car going 65.  Option #2 was to go off the freeway and let nature stop the car.  I chose to go off the freeway.  We took out a couple trees and we were headed straight on into a brick wall when I turned the car at the last second and parallel parked my Honda Pilot next to the brick wall.  Once the dust settled I hopped out to survey the damage.  We were buried under brush out of site of the cars on the freeway.  One car stopped after driving passed us, getting off at the next exit, and coming back around.  After a little conversation we figured out that they were headed to the church we were going to so they were able to connect with the church.  The CHP officer that got dispatched to the scene was the former Youth Pastor at a church I worked at when I was in college.  My family and I came out of this without a scratch on us but the car did not fair so well.  It ended up getting totaled.

In the days and weeks to follow this I had the phrase “I’m not finished yet. If I have breath, I have purpose” going through my head.  Like any songwriters would do, my wife and I sat down and wrote a song entitled, “Not Finished Yet”.  Here are the lyrics:

Not Finished Yet
Words and Music: Jason and Kacee Squires

As long as I breathe
As long as I run
As long as I see the setting and rising of the sun
As long as I dance
As long as I cry
As long as I live until the day that I die

You are not finished with me yet
As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will live for you

I will go where you say
I will do what you ask
Even if the road before me is a difficult task
I believe you are here
I believe in your story
Even if I question the journey before me

The painting is started
The clay must be molded
Do your work in me

We just finished a brand new album centered around this song and this idea that if you have breath, you have life.  If you are still here, you are not finished yet.   My prayer for you is that you don’t have to have a crazy life experience to realize your purpose.  What is your purpose?  Why are you here?  I can tell you its not to merely exist in the world.  There is a reason why you are here.

Not Finished Yet releases on March 16th.
